Chapter 6 - The Fall from Grace

Julian signed the papers.
He had no other choice.
If the footage went public, he wouldn't just be poor; he would be in prison.
The divorce was finalized with unprecedented speed.
I dropped his last name entirely, reverting to Clara Sterling.
The tech world moved on from Julian Vance faster than anyone could have predicted.
In Silicon Valley, you are only as good as your last success.
Julian was a liability, a toxic asset that no venture capitalist wanted to touch.
He tried to pitch new ideas, desperately calling old contacts from his motel room.
Most of them blocked his number.
The few who did answer laughed in his face.
Vivienne, true to her nature, had already moved on to a wealthy real estate developer.

He crumpled the paper in his fist, a bitter reminder of everything he had lost.
He had traded a loyal, brilliant wife for a shallow opportunist.
And it had cost him his entire universe.
Winter approached, and the bitter New York chill seeped into his motel room.
He couldn't afford to pay the heating bill.
He sat on the edge of the lumpy mattress, wearing his last remaining designer coat.
It was stained and frayed, a sad reflection of the man wearing it.
He stared at his hands, remembering the power they used to hold.
He remembered the feeling of dragging me across the floor, the cruel satisfaction he felt in dominating me.
Now, he was the one being dragged across the floor of life.
There was no redemption arc for Julian.
There was no sudden realization of his mistakes that would magically fix his circumstances.
He was simply a broken man, defeated by his own arrogance and cruelty.
He laid back on the bed, staring at the water stains on the ceiling.
He closed his eyes, desperately trying to forget the sound of his empire collapsing.
May you like
But the silence of the motel room was deafening.
It was the sound of complete and utter ruin.
