Chapter 2 - Blood and Sirens

The color completely drained from Julian’s face.

He stared at me as if I had suddenly morphed into a monster.

"What did you do?" he gasped, his voice barely a squeak.

"I don't know what you mean," I replied, my voice steady and cold.

A sudden, terrifying warmth spread between my legs.

I looked down and saw a dark stain blooming across the light fabric of my satin robe.

Panic, real and primal, finally pierced through my carefully constructed facade.

"My baby," I gasped, clutching my stomach as a wave of agonizing pain ripped through me.

Julian didn't even look at me.

He was scrambling on the floor, desperately trying to pick up his phone to call his broker.

"Julian, she's bleeding!" Vivienne shrieked, backing away toward the door in horror.

"Shut up, Viv!" he snapped, pressing the phone to his ear.

"Pick up, pick up, pick up!"

He was completely ignoring the fact that his pregnant wife was actively hemorrhaging on the floor of his bedroom.

I knew I was entirely on my own.

With trembling hands, I reached for my splintered tablet.

I bypassed the liquidation matrix and hit the emergency contact button for my private medical team.

The alert was sent instantly, paired with my GPS coordinates.

Within minutes, the wail of sirens pierced the Manhattan night, growing louder as they approached our building.

Julian was still screaming at an automated banking hotline when the paramedics burst through the front door downstairs.

"Up here!" Vivienne yelled, clearly wanting no part in a medical emergency.

Two EMTs rushed into the master suite, taking one look at the blood and immediately springing into action.

"Ma'am, we've got you," the lead paramedic said, gently lifting me onto a portable stretcher.

Julian finally hung up his phone, looking utterly bewildered as the medics wheeled me past him.

"Sir, are you coming?" the second paramedic asked, glaring at Julian's inaction.

"I... I can't," Julian stammered, staring at his phone.

"My accounts are frozen."

The paramedic looked at him with sheer disgust.

"Your wife is bleeding out, buddy," he growled.

"Get in the damn ambulance or stay out of the way."

I closed my eyes as they rolled me into the hallway.

I didn't care if Julian followed.

My only focus was the tiny heartbeat flickering inside me.

I had secured his future, but now I had to make sure he survived to see it.
