Chapter 10 - The Final Encounter

A year later, I was attending a charity gala in downtown Manhattan.

It was a fundraiser for a women's shelter I had personally financed.

I was walking toward my waiting limousine, escorted by two security guards, when a voice called out from the shadows.

"Clara."

I stopped.

I recognized that voice, though it sounded weak and raspy now.

Julian stepped out from the alleyway, looking years older than his actual age.

His hair was thinning, his posture was slumped, and his eyes were hollow.

My guards instantly stepped between us, their hands resting on their holstered weapons.

"Stand back," the lead guard barked.

"It's okay," I said softly, raising a hand to signal them to pause.

I looked at Julian, feeling absolutely nothing.

No anger.

No fear.

Just a cold, clinical detachment.

"Clara, please," he begged, clasping his hands together like a beggar.

"I've changed."

"I'm so sorry for everything I did to you."

"I just want to see Leo... just once."

I stared at him, observing the pathetic shell of the man who used to terrorize me.

"You don't have a son, Julian," I stated, my voice as hard as a diamond.

"You signed away those rights."

"I was desperate!" he cried, stepping forward before a guard shoved him back.

"I was ruined, I had no choice!"

"You always had a choice," I corrected him calmly.

"You chose to drag me across a floor."

"You chose to kick a pregnant woman for the amusement of your mistress."

"You chose your dominance over your family."

He sobbed, wiping his face with a dirty sleeve.

"Please, Clara, I have nothing."

I looked at him one last time, making sure he understood the absolute finality of my next words.

"And you never will."

I turned my back on him and stepped into the warmth of the limousine.

The door closed with a solid, satisfying thud.

As the car pulled away, merging into the bright lights of the city, I didn't look back.

I had an empire to run, a son to raise, and a beautiful life to live.

Julian Vance was simply a ghost, haunting a past I had already conquered.
