Chapter 5 - The Threshold of Redemption

Julian sat in the car until the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the coastal sky in bruised shades of purple and orange. The bakery’s open sign flickered off, and the lights inside dimmed.

He stepped out of the vehicle, his boots crunching quietly on the gravel driveway. The sea breeze whipped his dark coat around his legs as he walked toward the front door of the shop.

He didn't want to scare her. But he couldn't walk away.

He pushed the front door open. The brass bell chimed overhead.

From the back kitchenette, Clara emerged, wiping her hands on a small kitchen towel, her expression warm and expectant. “I’m sorry, we’re closed for the—termin—”

The words died on her lips.

The towel slipped from her fingers, fluttering down to settle on the scarred wooden floorboards. Her face drained of all color, her green eyes widening in absolute, paralyzing terror. She took two involuntary steps backward, her hand flying to her mouth.

“Julian,” she whispered, the name sounding like a curse and a prayer all at once.

“Hello, Clara,” Julian said, his voice cracking slightly—a sound he hadn't made in decades. He stopped a few feet away, terrified to take another step, as if touching her might prove she was just another mirage born of his guilt.

“How... how did you find me?” she stammered, her voice shaking violently as she scanned the room, as if looking for an escape route. “Did you send more men? Are you here to finish what you started?”

“No,” Julian said quickly, holding his hands up, palms open, showing he carried no weapon. “Clara, look at me. I didn't know.”

“You knew everything you wanted to know!” she cried, tears finally spilling over her lashes, breaking the composure she had fought so hard to maintain for four years. “You signed the papers without letting me speak! You threw me out into the snow with a target on my back!”

“Marcus lied,” Julian said, the words heavy and absolute. “I found the ultrasound. In the closet wall. I found the truth, Clara.”

Clara froze. The fight seemed to instantly drain out of her frame, leaving her swaying on her feet. “You... you found it?”
