Chapter 10 - The Second Vow

That evening, as the sun dipped below the tree line, painting the sky in deep ambers and golds, the estate grew quiet. Leo had finally worn himself out, falling asleep in his new bedroom upstairs.
Julian stood on the grand wrap-around porch, pouring two glasses of aged bourbon.
The French doors slid open, and Clara stepped out onto the porch, wrapped in a soft cashmere shawl. The haunting sadness that had shadowed her eyes in the Maine bakery was entirely gone, replaced by a radiant, fierce peace.
She walked up to him, taking one of the crystal glasses from his hand, and leaned against his shoulder.
“Penny for your thoughts, Mr. Vance,” she murmured with a faint, knowing smile.
Julian wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, inhaling the scent of vanilla and sea salt that always followed her.
“I was just thinking about that wall in the master closet,” Julian confessed quietly. “About how a little piece of hidden paper saved my life.”
Clara looked up at him, her green eyes sparkling in the twilight. “It wasn't the paper, Julian. It was the truth. The truth always finds a way out, no matter how deep you bury it.”
Julian kissed the top of her head, resting his chin in her hair as he looked out over their restored estate, their unbreakable home, and their shared future.
“Then let’s make a new rule,” Julian whispered, his voice steady and full of absolute devotion. “No more secrets. No more walls. Just us.”

Clara smiled, sliding her hand into his, their fingers interlocking tightly.
“Forever,” she agreed.
