Chapter 2 - The Collapse of the Inner Circle

Within twenty minutes, Julian’s armored Mercedes tore out of the Greenwich estate gates, leaving the demolition crews bewildered in its wake. He didn’t head back to Manhattan headquarters; instead, he routed straight to Marcus’s private, heavily fortified townhouse in the Upper East Side.
Marcus had known the audit was coming. By the time Julian’s detail blew the biometric front gates off their hinges, the foyer was empty, echoing with the hum of a server stack being wiped clean.
“Clear the rooms!” Julian commanded his remaining loyal security detail, men who had served his grandfather and knew the stench of treason when they smelled it.
Julian walked into Marcus’s private study. The mahogany desk was cluttered with half-shredded documents. On the monitor of an encrypted terminal, a remote data wipe was running at ninety percent. Julian didn’t hesitate—he pulled his sidearm and shattered the screen with a single, precise round.
The door to the private panic room clicked open behind him. Marcus stepped out, flanked by two private bodyguards holding automatic carbines.
“You’re making a monumental mistake, Julian,” Marcus said, raising his hands slightly, though his eyes darted toward the exit. “The syndicate board will never back a war based on a ghost and a piece of paper you claim to have found in a wall.”
“The board answers to me,” Julian said, stepping forward. He didn't even look at the two armed guards. “And you, Marcus... you answered to my grandfather. But you forgot whose blood actually runs through this family.”
“I made you!” Marcus screamed, his composure finally snapping. “Without me, you would have married that little nobody and retired to the country! I engineered your rise! I planted the ledgers! I made sure she walked out that door with nothing so you could rule without a soft spot!”
The confession hung in the air like poison gas.
One of Marcus’s guards slowly lowered his weapon, staring at Marcus in sheer disbelief. The code of the underworld tolerated ruthlessness, but framing a boss to manipulate a bloodline crossed an unforgivable line.
“You heard him,” Julian whispered to the room.
Before Marcus could draw his weapon, Julian’s elite detail opened fire. The two guards dropped instantly. Marcus stumbled backward, clutching a bleeding shoulder, crashing against his own mahogany desk.

Julian walked up, pressed the cold barrel of his gun against the center of Marcus’s forehead, and stared down with dead eyes.
“Where is she?” Julian asked.
