Chapter 9 - The Final Collapse

Julian didn't die in the streets, though he probably wished he had.

The Vanguard family didn't need the mob to take care of him; they used the law. The forensic accountants had finalized their report on the funds Julian had embezzled to support his secret lifestyle.

Two days after his pathetic display at the casino, federal agents kicked down the door of Julian’s motel room. He was arrested on charges of wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement. Because of his flight risk and his massive debts to criminal organizations, the judge denied bail.

Julian Rossi, the man who had worn bespoke Italian suits and drank three-thousand-dollar scotch, was reduced to an orange jumpsuit in a county holding cell.

His trial was a media circus. I didn't attend a single day. My lawyers handled the slaughter with surgical precision. Julian’s defense crumbled under the mountain of financial evidence.

As for Lexi? The sudden infamy of being the "homewrecker" who brought down the fake CEO destroyed her reputation in Las Vegas. No elite casino would hire her. The last I heard through the grapevine, she was working the graveyard shift at a rundown diner on the edge of the desert, pouring cheap coffee for truckers, her dreams of Malibu entirely evaporated.
