Chapter 6 - The Fall of the King

The descent was brutal and public.

By noon, the financial press had caught wind of the corporate slaughter. Headlines across major networks screamed: OBSIDIAN CEO OUSTED IN SHOCKING MIDNIGHT COUP; HEIRESS CLAIMS THE THRONE.

Julian drove back to the cheap motel, his phone ringing incessantly. Not with offers of support, but with creditors. Without the immense corporate backing of the Vanguard family, Julian’s personal debts—the ones he had secretly accrued to fund his lavish lifestyle and impress Lexi—were suddenly called in.

He walked into the motel room. Lexi was sitting on the edge of the sagging bed, frantically scrolling through her phone. She looked up when he entered, her expression sour.

“Is it true?” she demanded. “TMZ is saying you got fired. They’re saying you don't own anything!”

“It’s a temporary setback,” Julian lied, pacing the stained carpet, rubbing his temples. “I’m hiring a new legal team. I’m going to sue them for wrongful termination and corporate fraud. I just need to liquidate some personal stocks to cover the retainer.”

Lexi scoffed, standing up and grabbing her designer purse. “What stocks, Julian? I just read the Bloomberg article. Your wife’s family owns the entire syndicate. You’re broke.”

“Lexi, baby, listen to me—” Julian reached for her arm, but she yanked it back in disgust.

“Don't touch me,” she spat. “I didn't sign up to live in a roadside motel with a bankrupt fraud. You told me you were going to buy me a house in Malibu next week! You told me you were the king of Vegas!”

“I am!” Julian yelled, desperation cracking his voice.

“You’re a joke,” Lexi said coldly, heading for the door. “And by the way, the credit card you gave me got declined at the spa this morning. Don't ever call me again.”

The door slammed shut. Julian stood in the silence of the dingy room, the flashing neon sign of a pawn shop across the street bleeding red light through the cheap blinds. He had traded an empire and a queen for a girl who walked away the second the gold turned to dust.
