Chapter 1 - The Midnight Directive

The freezing pavement of the Las Vegas Strip bit through the thin soles of my designer heels, but I couldn't feel the cold. I could only feel the steady, rhythmic drumming of my own heart. Above me, the towering black-glass monolith of The Obsidian Resort & Casino pierced the night sky, its neon gold logos casting a brilliant, mocking glow over the valet circle.

Just ten minutes ago, my husband of twelve years, Julian, had stood in the center of the grand lobby I had meticulously designed, snapping his fingers at the security guards.

“Escort my ex-wife off the premises,” he had ordered, his voice echoing off the Italian marble. “She’s trespassing.”

And trailing behind him like a vapid shadow was Lexi. A twenty-something VIP host who had somehow climbed her way from the casino floor into my penthouse, wearing my limited-edition cashmere coat and twisting my grandmother’s diamond tennis bracelet around her wrist.

They thought they had won. Julian thought his name on the marriage certificate equated to absolute power. He had spent the last decade believing he was the mastermind behind the Obsidian’s global success, completely oblivious to the invisible strings that held his empire together.

I pocketed my phone. The conversation with my grandfather, Alistair Vanguard, had lasted less than thirty seconds, but it was enough to trigger a corporate earthquake.

Through the glass doors of the lobby, I watched the immediate shift in the atmosphere. The earpieces of the four security guards standing near the entrance simultaneously buzzed. I saw the Head of Security, a former Navy SEAL named Vance, reach up and press his finger to his ear. His posture instantly stiffened.

Vance looked through the glass, his eyes locking onto mine. For twelve years, Julian thought Vance worked for him. But Vance’s paycheck didn't come from Julian’s corporate accounts; it came from a blind trust in the Cayman Islands. A trust managed by the Vanguard family.

Vance gave me a barely perceptible nod, then turned on his heel. He didn't walk toward Julian’s office. He walked to the master security panel.

I pulled my coat tighter around my shoulders and watched the digital clocks above the casino floor tick toward midnight. The shift was beginning.
