Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Coup

The emergency board meeting of Vance Communications was held at 8:00 AM the next morning.

I walked into the glass-walled boardroom at the top of the Vance Tower. The room was filled with older men in expensive suits who had spent the last five years treating me like Julian’s decorative accessory.

Today, they stood up when I entered.

I took the seat at the head of the table—Julian’s seat.

Arthur Vance sat to my right. He gave me a small, approving nod.

“Gentlemen,” I said, placing my leather briefcase on the table. “By now, you are all aware of Julian’s legal situation. The FBI is auditing the European accounts, but I have already authorized the return of the embezzled funds from the Cayman accounts, thanks to the cooperation of his former wife.”

A collective sigh of relief washed over the room.

“Julian’s 10% minority share has been seized and returned to the trust,” I continued, projecting a flawless, commanding confidence. “As the proxy for the 61% majority shareholder, my son Leo, I am officially restructuring the executive suite. Julian is permanently removed from the board.”

One of the older board members, a loyalist to Julian, cleared his throat. “And who do you propose takes over as CEO, Clara? You have no corporate executive experience.”

I smiled. A shark’s smile.

“I didn't build this company, Richard, that’s true,” I said smoothly. “But for five years, I ghostwrote every successful quarterly strategy Julian presented to this board. I navigated the PR crisis during the 2023 supply chain failure. I secured the merger with Apex Tech while Julian was on a golf course. I don't just have experience. I was the one doing the work.”

Arthur Vance leaned forward. “I second Clara’s appointment as interim CEO. All in favor?”

Every single hand in the room went up.
