Chapter 10 - The New Empire

I drove home that evening in my own car, the rain tapping gently against the windshield.
When I walked through the doors of the Medina estate, the warmth of the house immediately wrapped around me. The smell of dinner cooking in the kitchen, the soft glow of the lamps, the absolute peace of my sanctuary.
I walked into the nursery.
Leo was awake in his crib, babbling happily at a plush lion hanging above him. He had my eyes. He had none of Julian’s cruelty.
I picked him up, holding him tightly against my chest. He grabbed a fistful of my silk blouse, strong and secure.
“Hey, my little king,” I whispered, kissing his forehead.
We walked out to the balcony adjoining his room, looking out over the glittering lights of the Seattle skyline. The city that had once felt like a prison built by my ex-husband was now my kingdom.
Julian had tried to bury me. He had tried to strip me of everything until I was nothing but a ghost in his grand narrative. But he forgot one fundamental rule about the women he considered weak.

I held my son, looking at the empire that was now secured for his future. The storm had finally passed, and we were the only ones left standing.
