Chapter 8 - Picking Up the Pieces

With my mother’s sudden, hysterical confession on the record, the trial was effectively over before it truly began. They both changed their pleas to guilty in exchange for avoiding maximum sentencing, though they were still facing hard time.
While the justice system processed them, I had to process my own trauma.
It wasn't easy. There were nights I woke up in cold sweats, phantom pains stinging my cheek where my father had slapped me. The betrayal of the people who were supposed to protect me left deep, invisible scars.
But I refused to let them win. I refused to let them define my narrative.
With the help of the FBI investigation, I was able to petition the credit bureaus and the federal loan servicers. Armed with the court convictions of identity theft, I systematically wiped the fraudulent loans from my credit report. My grandfather’s stolen trust was gone, completely squandered, but the crushing debt was finally lifted from my shoulders.
