Chapter 4 - The Extended Family Discovers the Truth

My parents’ strategy had always been about appearances. For four years, they had spun a web of lies to our extended family, claiming I had dropped out of college due to "behavioral issues" and "substance abuse," framing themselves as the tragic, long-suffering parents of a delinquent daughter. They did this to explain why they cut me off, masking the fact that I was actually working eighty-hour weeks to survive while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

That afternoon, my Aunt Susan—my father’s sister and the family matriarch—added me to a massive family group chat.

Aunt Susan: Lila, what on earth is going on? Your father used his one phone call to tell me you had them falsely arrested! How could you do this to your own parents? We are all so disappointed in you.

Uncle Robert: You need to drop these charges immediately, young lady. Family is family. You do not send your parents to jail over a misunderstanding.

I didn't type a long, emotional defense. I didn't argue.

Instead, I uploaded the documents.

I sent the PDF of the forged trust fund release. I sent the bank statements showing the exact dates the money was transferred to Lucas’s accounts. I sent the police report detailing the IP addresses. And finally, I sent a video Maya had taken at graduation—the video of my father slapping me across the face in front of hundreds of people.

Lila: They didn't just lie to me, they lied to all of you. They stole $60,000 from me and put me $40,000 in debt. And when I confronted them, he hit me. If any of you want to bail them out, go right ahead. But do not ever contact me again to defend them.

The group chat went dead silent.

Ten minutes later, Aunt Susan replied.

Aunt Susan: Oh my god. Lila... I am so sorry. We had no idea.

The dominoes fell rapidly after that. The extended family, terrified of being associated with federal fraud, entirely abandoned my parents. No one posted bail. No one offered to hire them a lawyer. They were completely, utterly alone.
