Chapter 8 - The Ultimatum

The custody threat vanished the moment Eleanor’s bank accounts were frozen by my legal team. Bullies always fold when you cut off their oxygen. But the corporate threat remained. The emergency board meeting was just ten days away, strategically aligned with the Vance Cybernetics Annual Gala.

Marcus had planned the gala as his unofficial coronation. He expected me to stay home, hidden away like a dirty secret, while he schmoozed the investors and secured their votes for the following morning.

“I am going to the gala,” I announced during our morning therapy session.

Clara looked up from adjusting my leg braces. She had ordered custom titanium calipers to support my knees. “Julian, it’s a high-stress environment. The sensory overload alone could trigger spasticity in your legs.”

“I don't care. I am not letting Marcus stand at my podium and talk about my company.” I gripped the parallel bars. “We are accelerating the timeline. I need to be able to stand. Not on the bars. On my own two feet. Behind that podium.”

Clara bit her lip, her clinical mind calculating the risk. “If your knees buckle in front of five hundred investors, the board will vote you out unanimously before the appetizers are cleared.”

“Then you make sure I don't buckle.”

She looked at me, seeing the absolute determination in my eyes. She knew this was no longer just about physical recovery; it was about reclaiming my dignity.

“Fine,” she said, her voice turning razor-sharp. “But if we do this, we do it my way. You belong to me for the next ten days. No phone calls, no emails, no distractions. It is going to be the most agonizing pain of your life.”

“Bring it on,” I challenged.

She wasn't lying. The next ten days were a descent into hell. We worked until my muscles gave out, until my hands bled from gripping the bars, until I vomited from the sheer neurological exhaustion. Clara pushed me past the breaking point, and when I shattered, she was right there to piece me back together, forcing me upright again and again.
