Chapter 12 - The Fallout

The aftermath of the gala was a bloodbath for my enemies. The emergency board vote the next morning was unanimously canceled. The investors, completely energized by the dramatic display of resilience from their CEO, doubled down on their support. The stock surged seven percent by the time the market closed.

Marcus was quietly escorted out of the building by corporate security before noon, forced to resign with a heavily restrictive NDA and a severed golden parachute. Eleanor’s lawyers frantically called Harrison, begging to drop the custody petition in exchange for leniency on the corporate espionage charges. We let her surrender.

But I didn't care about the stock price or the boardroom victories. The moment I arrived back at the Lake Washington estate, the adrenaline completely crashed.

Clara and my driver helped me out of the SUV and into my chair. My legs were trembling so violently I could barely speak. The physical toll of what I had done was immense.

Clara pushed me inside, past a cheering Lily who had stayed up late with the housekeeper to watch the news clips, and wheeled me straight into the master suite.

“You did it,” Clara whispered, helping me out of my tuxedo jacket. “You actually did it.”

I was exhausted, in pain, and entirely stripped of my corporate armor. I reached out, pulling her by the waist until she fell onto my lap. She gasped softly, her hands resting on my shoulders.

“I didn't do it,” I said, looking deeply into her eyes. “We did it. You saved my life, Clara. You saved my company. You saved my family.”

She traced the line of my jaw with her thumb, her eyes incredibly soft. “You’re a terrible patient, Mr. Vance.”

“And you’re a terrible nanny, Ms. Hayes.”

I didn't wait any longer. I pulled her down and kissed her. It wasn't hesitant or desperate; it was a profound collision of everything we had built together over the last two months. She kissed me back fiercely, tangling her fingers into my hair, erasing the final boundaries that had kept us apart.
