Chapter 15 - The Unbreakable Foundation (Conclusion)

A year later.

The Seattle sun was setting over Lake Washington, casting a brilliant orange glow through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the grand foyer.

I was standing near the fireplace, wearing a tailored suit, adjusting my cuffs. I didn't need the cane today. My right leg still had a slight limp, a permanent signature of the crash, but it was a limp I wore like a badge of honor.

Lily ran down the floating staircase, wearing a beautiful ivory flower-girl dress, clutching a basket of rose petals.

“Daddy, she’s ready!” Lily beamed, bouncing on her heels.

“Alright, kiddo. Go take your place,” I smiled, kissing her forehead.

The heavy oak front doors were open, letting in the warm evening breeze. The foyer, the exact spot where I had once lain completely paralyzed and broken, had been transformed. Rows of white chairs were filled with our closest friends, colleagues, and family.

The string quartet in the corner began to play a soft, indie folk song—the exact melody Clara used to hum while making waffles on Sunday mornings.

I looked down the aisle. Clara stepped into the foyer. She wore a simple, breathtaking white gown, her hair falling softly around her shoulders. As she walked toward me, the entire world outside this room simply ceased to exist.

She didn't save me by carrying my burdens. She saved me by refusing to let me surrender to them. She reached the altar, slipping her hand into mine. Her grip was strong, grounded, and deliberate.

“You doing okay?” she whispered, a playful glint in her eye.

“I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be,” I whispered back.

I looked at the woman who had rebuilt my spine, conquered my demons, and captured my heart. I squeezed her hand, ready to take the next step. Together.
