Chapter 9 - The Secret Deposition

While Julian and Diane were tearing each other apart on the fifteenth floor of the hotel, I was sitting in a secure, private conference room on the third floor of the Federal District Courthouse, five blocks away from the chaos at the ballroom. My motorized wheelchair was parked at the head of a long wooden table, surrounded by Detective Callahan, two senior FBI financial investigators, and Assistant United States Attorney David Chen.
A professional legal videographer had set up two high-definition cameras on tripods at the far end of the room, recording every word and gesture of my sworn, formal grand jury deposition. Despite the physical exhaustion threatening to overwhelm my healing body, I sat straight and spoke with a calm, analytical precision that made the federal prosecutors nod in profound respect.
"For the record, Mrs. Vance," AUSA Chen said, adjusting his glasses as he looked over his legal pad. "Let us transition from the financial embezzlement evidence to the events of June thirteenth—the morning of your injury at the Sterling-Vance estate. Please describe the physical state of the second-story terrace railing prior to your fall."
"The railing was constructed of custom-welded wrought iron, installed when my father built the estate twenty years ago," I testified into the microphone, my eyes locked directly onto the camera lens. "For two decades, that railing was structurally immaculate—solid, rigid, and regularly inspected by our estate maintenance staff. However, on the morning of June thirteenth, when I stepped out onto the terrace to check the garden irrigation system, I noticed a distinct, unusual residue along the base of the central mounting brackets."
"Can you describe that residue for the court, Mrs. Vance?" Chen asked gently.
"It was a powdery, grayish-white chemical film, smelling faintly of sulfur and muriatic acid," I stated clearly. "When I placed my hands on the top bar of the railing and leaned forward slightly to look at the garden beds below, there was no normal mechanical resistance. The entire twelve-foot section of wrought iron sheared off instantly at the base bolts with a clean, metallic snap. There was no bending, no gradual yielding—it simply vanished beneath my hands, throwing me thirty feet down onto the stone patio terrace below."
Chen nodded, reaching into an evidence folder on the table and pulling out an enlarged, high-resolution forensic photograph of the broken metal mounting bracket taken by crime scene technicians at my estate. "Mrs. Vance, I am showing you Government Exhibit 4-B. Does this appear to be the mounting bracket you observed on the morning of your fall?"
"Yes," I said, looking at the photograph where the clean, shiny tool marks of a high-speed cutting disc were clearly visible beneath a layer of chemically induced rust.
"Detective Callahan," Chen said, turning his attention to the veteran investigator sitting to my right. "For the benefit of the video deposition, please state the findings of the FBI forensic laboratory regarding Exhibit 4-B."

Callahan leaned into his microphone, his rough voice carrying absolute, undeniable authority. "Laboratory analysis confirms that the mounting bolts of the second-story terrace railing at the Vance estate were deliberately severed using an angle grinder equipped with a diamond-grit cutting wheel, leaving less than two millimeters of metal intact. Furthermore, the severed edges were treated with a commercial-grade nitric acid solution to accelerate corrosion and disguise the cuts as natural metal fatigue. On Tuesday afternoon, during a lawful search of Julian Vance’s private workshop at the estate, investigators recovered a cordless angle grinder and a half-empty bottle of industrial nitric acid. DNA swabbing of the grinder handle yielded a 99.9% positive match to Julian Vance."
I closed my eyes for a brief second, feeling a wave of profound, vindicating relief wash over my exhausted soul. Julian hadn't just been sloppy; his arrogance had left a trail of forensic evidence so bright and clear that no high-priced defense lawyer in the country could ever explain it away.
