Chapter 6 - The Press Conference

The Grand Ballroom of the Grand Regency Hotel was a monument to corporate opulence and manufactured prestige. Crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant, warm light over three hundred wealthy investors, Wall Street analysts, and financial journalists sipping champagne and picking at gourmet hors d'oeuvres. At the front of the room, a massive LED screen displayed the sleek, modern logo of Vance-Sterling Biotech, flanked by two towering floral arrangements of white lilies—the exact flowers Julian had brought to my ICU bedside to perform his grief.

Behind the velvet curtain of the main stage, Julian paced back and forth, adjusting the silk tie of his custom tuxedo. He looked exhausted; dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes, and his hands trembled slightly as he checked his platinum watch for the tenth time in five minutes. Beside him, Diane Frost was frantically scrolling through her phone, her face pale and taut with nervous tension.

"The bridge loan from the Chicago consortium hasn't cleared yet, Julian," Diane hissed, stepping close to him so the backstage technicians wouldn't hear. "If we don't announce a finalized restructuring agreement tonight, our stock is going to open down twenty percent on Monday morning. The margin calls will wipe out our remaining un-frozen personal assets by noon."

"Relax, Diane! I have everything under control!" Julian snapped, wiping a bead of cold sweat from his forehead with a silk handkerchief. "Once I get out on that stage and deliver the speech about Clara’s tragic accident and my vision for the company's future, the institutional investors will fall in line. Sympathy sells in this market. The press loves a grieving husband dedicating his life’s work to his fallen wife’s memory."

He took a deep, steadying breath as the ballroom lights began to dim, signaling the start of the presentation. The opening chords of an inspiring, cinematic corporate anthem swelled through the surround-sound speakers, and a polished public relations moderator stepped up to the acrylic podium at the center of the stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed investors, and members of the press," the moderator announced, his voice booming across the silent ballroom. "Please welcome the Chief Executive Officer of Vance-Sterling Biotech, Mr. Julian Vance!"

The room erupted into polite, sustained applause. Julian plastered his signature, charismatic smile across his face, stepping out from behind the velvet curtain into the blinding glare of the stage spotlights. He walked confidently to the podium, waving gracefully to the crowd, projecting the perfect image of a resilient corporate leader overcoming personal tragedy.

"Thank you," Julian said into the microphone, his voice dripping with practiced, emotional sincerity. "Thank you all for being here tonight during what has undoubtedly been the most difficult, heartbreaking chapter of my personal and professional life. As many of you know, my beloved wife, Clara—the heart and soul of our founding family—suffered a horrific accident four weeks ago that has left her incapacitated."

He paused, bowing his head slightly as a collective murmur of sympathy rippled through the audience. In the front row of the press section, camera shutters clicked rapidly, capturing his perfectly staged moment of sorrow.

"While Clara fights for her recovery in private," Julian continued, lifting his head with an expression of fierce determination, "she would want nothing more than to see her father’s vision continue to thrive and expand. That is why tonight, I am proud to announce the comprehensive strategic consolidation of—"

Before he could finish the sentence, the main double doors at the back of the Grand Ballroom were pushed open with a loud, echoing crash that cut through the amplification system and brought the entire room to a dead, confused silence.
