Chapter 3 - Bending The Law

The social worker, Mrs. Higgins, looked at Donovan as if he were a loaded gun.

"Mr. Ree, you are a single, unmarried man with no relation to this child," she stammered.

"You also have... a reputation in this city."

Donovan sat across from her cramped desk, looking entirely out of place in his tailored Italian suit.

Pax stood by the door, looking like a mountain of pure intimidation.

"My reputation is precisely why you are going to listen to me," Donovan said smoothly.

"That child is the heir to the Callaway estate."

"Her life is in danger as long as the people who stole her trust fund think she is unprotected."

Mrs. Higgins swallowed hard, shuffling her papers.

"The system doesn't work this way, sir."

"We can't just hand a child over to a billionaire because he asks."

Donovan leaned forward, resting his scarred knuckles on her desk.

"I am not asking."

"My legal team is currently filing an emergency injunction citing extreme financial fraud and endangerment."

"I have already secured a temporary foster license through a private agency."

"You are going to release Mave Callaway into my custody, or I will buy the building this agency sits in and turn it into a parking lot."

Ten minutes later, Mave was walking out the front doors holding Greer’s hand.

Donovan opened the door of his armored SUV for her.

Mave climbed in, looking at the plush leather seats with awe.

"Are we going back to the hotel?" she asked.

"We are going to my home," Donovan said, buckling her seatbelt himself.

"It's on the very top of the hotel."

Mave squeezed her stuffed elephant.

"Do I have to be quiet there too?"

Donovan felt a sharp ache in his chest.

May you like

"No, Mave," he said fiercely.

"You can be as loud as you want."
