Chapter 9 - The Arraignment

The federal courthouse was buzzing with reporters when Marcus and Diane were brought into the courtroom on Monday morning, wearing matching orange jumpsuits and heavy chains around their ankles. Their high-priced local defense attorney, a slick man named Vance Sterling who specialized in defending wealthy DUI clients, looked visibly sweating as he organized his papers on the defense table.

When the bailiff called the courtroom to order, Judge Alvarez presided from the bench, his expression set in stone as he reviewed the preliminary evidence package my office had submitted over the weekend. Marcus kept his eyes glued to the defense table, but Diane turned her head toward the gallery, her eyes widening in shock as she saw who was sitting in the front row right beside me.

It was my mother. She was sitting upright in a wheelchair, wearing a sharp navy-blue dress suit she had asked me to buy her that morning, her silver hair styled neatly around her face. Her bruises were covered with a light layer of makeup, but her posture was royal, unbroken, and fiercely composed. She looked directly into Diane’s panicked eyes and didn't flinch once.

“Your Honor,” Sterling began, his voice lacking its usual courtroom theatricality. “My clients are respected members of the community who took on the overwhelming burden of caring for an elderly relative with documented cognitive decline. We request reasonable bail so they can assist in preparing their defense against these exaggerated family misunderstandings.”

“Mr. Sterling,” Judge Alvarez interrupted, leaning over the bench and peering down over his reading glasses with absolute contempt. “I have in front of me a toxicology report from St. Jude’s Hospital proving your clients were dosing an eighty-year-old woman with enough veterinary-grade sedatives to tranquilize a horse, alongside photographic evidence of ligature marks that would make a prison warden wince. This is not a family misunderstanding. This is a calculated, brutal campaign of torture and theft.”
