Chapter 11 - The Discovery in the Closet

Three days after the arraignment, I accompanied a specialized forensic search team back to my mother’s house to oversee the execution of a federal search warrant. We needed to recover whatever personal property hadn't already been sold or shipped offshore, specifically my mother’s heirloom jewelry collection, which had belonged to my grandmother and great-grandmother.
The house still held the lingering scent of bleach, but with the windows open and the sunlight streaming in, the oppressive atmosphere had finally broken. While the technical crime scene investigators dusted the living room furniture for fingerprint evidence to match against the restraint straps, I walked upstairs to the master bedroom that Marcus and Diane had taken over after displacing my mother to the tiny ground-floor guest room.
In the back of Diane’s walk-in closet, hidden beneath a pile of expensive designer dresses and imported silk shoes purchased with my mother's stolen money, I noticed a false wooden panel built into the floorboards. I called over one of the federal agents, who used a crowbar to pry the loose wood away from the joists.

Beneath the floorboards lay a large, heavy steel safe. Using a locksmith toolkit seized during the arrest, the tech team managed to bypass the digital combination lock within twenty minutes. When the heavy steel door swung open, I felt a deep wave of relief wash over my chest.
Inside, stacked neatly in velvet-lined trays, was every single piece of my mother’s antique jewelry collection—the diamond brooches, the pearl necklaces, and the sapphire rings she had feared were gone forever. Alongside the jewelry, we found a ledger handwritten by Diane, detailing every single dollar they had siphoned from Mom’s accounts over the past year, complete with notes on which local pawn shops would give them the best cash payout for the gold.
