Chapter 1 - The Turn of the Knob

The brass knob twisted violently to the left, then jerked back to the right as Marcus threw his weight against the solid wood. The frame groaned under the pressure, shedding a fine layer of white paint chips onto the tile floor. On the other end of the line, Judge Alvarez’s voice cut through the static with the sharp, practiced authority of a federal magistrate who had presided over decades of violent crime dockets.

“Sarah, I have the duty registrar calling the local sheriff’s department on my second line right now,” Alvarez said, his tone leaving no room for negotiation. “I am verbally granting an emergency ex parte order of protection for Eleanor Jenkins, effective this very second. You have legal custody of her person and her estate. Keep that door shut until uniforms are on the scene.”

“Open this door right now, Sarah!” Marcus bellowed from the hallway, his voice dropping its polished, sacrificial-son veneer to reveal something feral and desperate. “You’re upsetting her! She needs her evening medication, and if you don’t open up, I’m taking the hinges off with a screwdriver!”

I looked down at my mother. She was curled on the bath mat, clutching the damp towel around her bruised shoulders like a shield, her chest heaving with silent, terrified sobs. I knelt beside her, pressed my thumb over my phone's screen to capture the timestamp of the judge's verbal order, and looked toward the rattling door.

“You touch that door, Marcus, and you’ll be adding assault of a federal officer to your indictment,” I called out, my voice cutting through his rage like ice. “The police are already three minutes away. Go ahead. Give them something else to arrest you for when they pull into the driveway.”

The pounding stopped instantly. Through the thick wood, I heard the unmistakable sound of Diane whispering frantically, her heels clicking fast across the hardwood floor as the reality of their exposure began to set in.
