Chapter 13 - A Desperate Plea

Two weeks after the courtroom humiliation, Clara was officially living out of cardboard boxes. Her landlord had filed the formal eviction paperwork, and her remaining cash had evaporated. In a final, desperate act of boundary violation, she tracked Julian down to the underground parking garage of his office building, having slipped past the perimeter gates by trailing behind a delivery truck.

When Julian walked out to his Mercedes at 6:00 PM, his keys in hand, Clara stepped out from behind a concrete pillar. She looked like a shell of her former self—dark circles bruised the skin beneath her eyes, her hair was unwashed, and she wore a faded winter coat that hung loosely over her frame.

"Julian! Please, wait!" she cried out, her voice echoing in the damp, cavernous garage. She dropped to her knees on the cold concrete right beside his driver's side door, clasping her hands together in prayer. "Please! I'm begging you! I have forty-eight hours before the sheriff locks me out of the house! Where are my girls supposed to sleep?!"

Julian stopped, looking down at her with an expression that contained no anger, no pity, and no familial warmth. He looked at her as if she were a stranger asking for directions.

"You should have thought about where your children would sleep before you decided to torture mine," Julian said evenly, his voice echoing off the concrete walls.

"I was sick, Julian! I was stressed! My ex-husband abandoned us, and I was jealous of how perfect your life was!" she sobbed, grabbing at the hem of his wool overcoat. "I'm sorry! I'll apologize to Aria on my knees! Just turn the money back on! You're my brother!"

Julian took a deliberate step backward, pulling his coat from her grasp. "You didn't cut my daughter’s hair because you were stressed, Clara. You cut it because you wanted to break her spirit so your own miserable life would feel taller by comparison. You are not my sister anymore. You are just the woman who attacked my kid."

He unlocked his car, stepped inside, and closed the heavy door, sealing off her frantic, screaming pleas. He started the engine, shifted into drive, and pulled out of the garage without checking his rearview mirror even once.
