Chapter 7 - The Chase in the Clouds

The rooftop of the skyscraper was completely engulfed in a torrential downpour, the heavy rain masking the deafening roar of the waiting helicopter.
Nguyen sprinted across the slick, rain-washed concrete, his expensive Italian suit instantly soaked and clinging to his terrified frame.
The pilot was frantically signaling for him to hurry, the massive blades slicing through the storm and threatening to destabilize the aircraft.
Just as Nguyen reached out to grab the handle of the helicopter door, the heavy metal door to the rooftop stairwell exploded outward.
Inspector Vance burst through the smoke and debris, his weapon drawn and aimed squarely at the billionaire's chest.
"It's over, Nguyen, step away from the chopper and put your hands behind your head!" Vance shouted over the roaring wind.
Nguyen turned slowly, his eyes wild with absolute desperation, and raised his silver revolver toward the inspector.
"You can't touch me, I can buy this entire city and everyone in it!" Nguyen screamed, completely losing his grip on reality.
Vance didn't hesitate, his years of tactical training taking over as he fired a single, precise warning shot that shattered the helicopter's windshield.
The terrified pilot immediately aborted the escape plan, violently yanking the controls and lifting the helicopter away from the roof, abandoning his wealthy employer.
Nguyen watched his only escape route vanish into the dark, stormy clouds, leaving him completely trapped on the edge of the towering skyscraper.
He backed away slowly until his heels hit the low concrete ledge, the dizzying drop of fifty stories yawning beneath him.
"She told me, Nguyen," Vance yelled, slowly advancing with his weapon perfectly steady.
"Mai told me everything before she died, she gave you up in her very last breath on this earth."
Nguyen let out a broken, hysterical laugh, the sound hollow and pathetic as it was swallowed by the violent thunderstorm.

He looked down at the tiny, flashing police lights on the street below, realizing that his immense empire had officially burned to ashes.
With a defeated sob, he dropped the silver revolver onto the wet concrete and slowly raised his trembling hands into the air.
