Chapter 3 - The Dead Man's Ledger

The cramped, dimly lit apartment of Tuong Lai Nghia remained exactly as he had left it on that fatal morning in June.

His grieving mother had preserved his room as a sacred shrine, refusing to pack away his clothes or the heavy, antique typewriter on his desk.

Inspector Vance stood in the center of the room, shining his tactical flashlight across the dusty stacks of cheap paper.

He had come looking for any piece of leverage, anything that might connect the innocent typist to the billionaire's dark underworld.

Nghia was known to be desperately poor, earning a pathetic seven hundred yuan a month, which he spent entirely trying to keep Mai’s fleeting affection.

But as Vance ran his gloved fingers over the bottom of the heavy desk, he felt a strange, unnatural ridge in the cheap plywood.

He pulled a pocket knife from his coat, wedged it into the hidden seam, and pried open a concealed compartment built into the drawer.

Inside lay a single, leather-bound notebook, wrapped tightly in a thick layer of protective plastic.

Vance opened the book, his eyes widening as he scanned pages upon pages of meticulously typed codes, dates, and massive financial figures.

Nghia had not just been a lowly typist at a random government office; he had been secretly moonlighting as an auditor for a local accounting firm.

That specific firm was responsible for handling the offshore shell companies owned and operated by Kim Van Nguyen’s massive corporate conglomerate.

The numbers in the ledger painted a devastating picture of massive tax evasion, illegal smuggling routes, and widespread political bribery.

Nghia had inadvertently stumbled upon the financial blueprint of a criminal empire, and he had documented every single dirty detail.

Vance realized with horrifying clarity that the love triangle was nothing more than a brilliantly orchestrated cover story.

Nghia had not been murdered simply because he was a jealous, annoying ex-boyfriend who wouldn't let go of a beautiful woman.

He was assassinated because he possessed the exact documents needed to send Kim Van Nguyen to federal prison for the rest of his life.

Mai was never the mastermind; she was just a beautiful, greedy pawn chosen by Nguyen to execute the perfect, untraceable hit.

Vance pocketed the ledger, feeling the massive weight of the explosive truth pressing down upon his shoulders.
