Chapter 8 - The Courtroom Showdown

The hearing for the permanent restraining order was swift and merciless.

Mom showed up in a conservative black suit, trying to play the tragic, heartbroken matriarch. But the judge had already seen the police report, the threatening text messages, and the video of the school parking lot incident captured by three different parents.

"Mrs. Vance," the judge said, looking down at Mom over his glasses. "You struck the petitioner's wife. You stalked them to their child's school. You have weaponized the legal system with a baseless Grandparents' Rights petition that I am throwing out as of this moment."

Mom stood up, tears streaming down her face. "Your Honor, I just love my family! They are keeping my blood from me!"

"You lost the privilege of seeing your family the moment you resorted to violence," the judge snapped. "I am granting a three-year permanent restraining order. You are not to come within five hundred feet of Michael, Sarah, or Mia. If you contact them in any way, you will be jailed."

The gavel banged. The sound was like a heavy iron door slamming shut on my past.

As we walked out of the courthouse, Mom stood in the hallway, looking completely broken. She had no husband. Her golden child, Chloe, was broke and bitter. Her enabler, David, looked miserable.

She looked at me, a silent plea in her eyes.

I didn't even break my stride. I held Sarah’s hand, walked right past her, and stepped out into the bright sunshine.
