Chapter 2 - The Financial Snare

When Dad died, he left Mom everything. To "help" Sarah and me when we got married, Mom had co-signed our mortgage and paid the down payment. She never let us forget it. It was the invisible leash she yanked whenever we stepped out of line.

I looked at her, standing in the sleet, wielding a house over my head to justify her abuse.

"Sell it," I said.

Mom blinked, the icy facade cracking. "What?"

"Sell the house. Put it on the market tomorrow. Sarah and I have been putting away a safety net for five years because we knew you'd eventually use this place as a weapon." I stepped closer, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "We will be moved out by Monday. You can keep the equity, Mom. Consider it the price of admission to never see my face again."

I turned my back on her, walked to the car, and drove right across the wet lawn to bypass her Lexus, parking in the street. I carried Mia inside, keeping Sarah shielded from my mother’s frantic, screaming protests.

We locked the heavy front door. Outside, Mom pounded on the wood for ten minutes before finally giving up. The sound of her Lexus speeding away was the sound of a chain finally snapping.

That night, as we packed moving boxes, Sarah found me staring at the wall in our bedroom.

"We're really doing this?" she asked, setting a hand on my shoulder.

"We're doing this," I promised her, kissing her forehead. "I'm done being her hostage."
