Chapter 8 - The Corporate Downgrade

When a man’s personal life collapses in public view, his corporate utility to an enterprise like Vale Industries drops to near zero—especially when that enterprise is currently terrified of having its commercial loans called in by an aggressive private equity syndicate.
Three days after the Seaport eviction, Julian walked into the executive suite of Vale Industries downtown, expecting to find solace in his $180,000-a-year position as Senior Vice President of Marketing. He had spent the weekend living out of a cramped, mid-tier extended-stay motel near the airport, arguing incessantly with Victoria, who was threatening to file for an annulment if he didn't secure a new luxury residence immediately.
When Julian reached his corner glass office overlooking the harbor, his key card flashed red. The electronic reader beeped an angry denial: ACCESS TERMINATED.
"What is going on here?" Julian muttered, rattling the glass door handle.
"Mr. Thornton," a cool, professional voice called out from behind him.
Julian spun around to find Linda, the Vice President of Human Resources, standing in the corridor accompanied by two corporate security guards and carrying a small cardboard banker's box containing Julian’s desk photographs and personal items.
"Linda, why is my office locked?" Julian demanded, putting on his best executive posture. "I have a nine o'clock presentation with the regional branding team."
"Your presentation has been reassigned to junior management, Julian," Linda said, her face a mask of corporate neutrality as she handed him the cardboard box. "Effective as of 8:00 AM today, your position as Senior Vice President of Marketing has been formally eliminated due to corporate restructuring and administrative downsizing."
Julian’s face turned scarlet. "Downsizing?! I am the founder’s son-in-law! You cannot terminate my employment without Richard Vale’s direct authorization!"
"Mr. Vale personally signed your termination packet last night," Linda replied smoothly, pulling a formal legal envelope from her clipboard and laying it on top of his cardboard box. "In light of recent external financial pressures on the firm and the potential for public liability regarding your personal legal affairs, the executive committee determined that your continued employment represents an unacceptable reputational risk to Vale Industries."
"This is my father doing this!" Julian screamed, his composure shattering entirely in the middle of the executive hallway as junior analysts peeked out of their cubicles to watch the spectacle. "He’s blackmailing Richard! You tell Richard Vale that if he fires me, Victoria is going to walk out on his family forever!"

"Ms. Vale is currently in her father’s office on the thirty-second floor reviewing her own marital options, Mr. Thornton," Linda said coldly, gesturing to the security guards. "Please escort Mr. Thornton out of the building and ensure his parking garage pass is deactivated. Have a good day, sir."
As the security guards marched Julian out of the elevator bank carrying his cardboard box of memories, he realized the absolute, terrifying totality of what had occurred. He had lost his trust fund. He had lost his luxury penthouse. He had lost his corporate executive career. The golden boy of Boston high society had been completely, systematically stripped down to his shoelaces in less than thirty days.
