Chapter 13 - The Vale Family Abandonment

When an arrogant corporate bully like Richard Vale realizes that his own daughter has been indicted on public criminal charges backed by incontrovertible video evidence—and that defending her in court could trigger a fatal financial retaliation from a private equity syndicate holding his commercial loans—his paternal loyalty evaporates with breathtaking speed.

On Wednesday morning, following Julian and Victoria’s overnight stay in the holding cells of the Suffolk County Jail, their preliminary bail and arraignment hearing was convened in Courtroom 3B of the Superior Courthouse.

Julian sat at the defense table in a faded orange county prison jumpsuit, his wrists shackled to a steel waist chain, looking exhausted, disheveled, and completely broken. Across the aisle sat Victoria, wearing a matching orange jumpsuit, weeping uncontrollably into her chained hands as she looked around the crowded gallery for her father.

Richard Vale was not in the courtroom. He had not come to bail his daughter out, nor had he sent his prestigious corporate legal team to represent her. Instead, he had sent a junior associate from an outside criminal defense firm with explicit, non-negotiable instructions from Vale Industries.

When the magistrate judge called the docket, Victoria’s newly assigned lawyer stood up to make a statement before bail was even addressed.

"Your Honor," the attorney said, his voice flat and clinical. "I am appearing today for the limited purpose of representing Ms. Vale during this preliminary arraignment. I have been instructed by my client’s family and the executive board of Vale Industries to state for the public record that the actions depicted in the Rosewood Country Club surveillance footage were conducted entirely independently by the defendants, without the knowledge, consent, or endorsement of the Vale family."

Victoria looked up from her chained hands, her bloodshot eyes wide with utter, catastrophic disbelief. "Mr. Harrison... where is my father? Why isn't my father here to post my bond?!"

"Your father is currently in Tokyo negotiating a commercial shipping contract, Ms. Vale," the attorney replied coldly, not even looking her in the eye. "He has instructed me to inform you that due to the severe reputational damage this criminal indictment has inflicted upon Vale Industries’ institutional standing, he will not be posting your bail, nor will he be funding your ongoing legal defense. You have been formally removed from the Vale Family Living Trust, and your corporate credit accounts have been terminated. You will need to apply for a public defender or utilize your own personal resources to navigate these charges."

"He... he abandoned me?" Victoria whispered, her voice cracking into a high-pitched, hysterical sob that echoed through the courtroom. "He left me in jail?!"

"He left you to face the consequences of your own conduct, ma'am," the attorney said dryly, and sat down.

At the other end of the defense table, Julian looked at his weeping bride with an expression of pure, toxic venom. His own public defender—an overworked municipal lawyer who had just received the case file an hour prior—didn't even attempt to argue against the prosecution's request for high bail, knowing that the video evidence made any claim of innocence laughable.

The magistrate judge set bail at $100,000 cash for Julian and $50,000 cash for Victoria, attaching a mandatory lifetime Stay-Away Order prohibiting both defendants from ever contacting me, Clara, or approaching our residential property. Unable to post even ten percent of the cash bond due to their frozen accounts and abandoned trusts, both the groom and his bride were remanded back to the county holding cells to await their criminal trial in separate, concrete worlds.
