Chapter 9 - The Extinction Burst

The final desperate attempt to regain control came in early spring.
I received a certified letter in the mail. It was a petition for "Grandparents' Rights," demanding scheduled visitation with Leo. The legal document was filled with fabrications about my "mental instability" and claims that I was alienating Leo from a "loving and supportive family environment."
I didn't panic. I didn't cry. I just felt a cold, clinical exhaustion.
I drove straight to Marcus’s office and dropped the envelope on his desk.
"They filed for visitation," I said.
Marcus read over the document, scoffing. "They hired a strip-mall lawyer. This is completely frivolous. In this state, grandparents only have a right to petition if the parents are divorced or deceased, and they have to prove they have a substantial, pre-existing bond that benefits the child."
"They don't have a bond. They barely know his middle name," I said.
"I'll handle this," Marcus promised.
He didn't just handle it. He obliterated it.
During the preliminary hearing, which was held via Zoom, my parents looked haggard and furious. Their cheap lawyer tried to paint me as a bitter daughter withholding their precious grandchild.
Marcus countered by presenting the judge with a mountain of evidence. He submitted affidavits from my uncle and sister (who, in their desperation to avoid being dragged into a fraud investigation, gladly sold my parents out) confirming the physical slap at Thanksgiving. He submitted the financial records proving my parents' long-term financial exploitation of me. He submitted character references from Leo's teachers, my pediatrician, and my employees.
The judge—a stern woman with absolutely no patience for domestic drama—took one look at the evidence and dismissed the petition with prejudice.

"Mr. and Mrs. Romano," the judge said sharply before disconnecting, "you do not have a right to a child you physically struck and verbally demeaned. Furthermore, considering the financial manipulation documented here, I suggest you stay far away from your daughter. If you file another frivolous motion in my court, I will sanction you for harassment."
The screen went black. It was over. The ultimate, final severing.
