Chapter 4 - The Golden Child Cracks

By Thursday, the shockwaves had reached my sister.

I was sitting in a local coffee shop near Leo's school, answering emails on my laptop, when Claire marched in. She looked frantic. Her perfectly blown-out hair was messy, and she was wearing yesterday's makeup.

She slammed her hands down on my small café table, rattling my latte.

"Do you have any idea what you've done?" she hissed, looking around wildly.

"Good morning to you too, Claire. Have a seat."

She dropped into the chair opposite me. "Dad’s company is in receivership. The bank is seizing the fleet. Mom is practically catatonic in the guest bedroom. And my credit cards were just declined at Nordstrom!"

Ah, there it was. The real tragedy.

"Dad pays your credit cards," I stated, closing my laptop. "You're thirty years old, Claire. You have a master's degree that you've never used. Maybe it's time to get a job."

"You're a monster," she spat, her eyes welling with tears. "You're tearing this family apart because you're jealous! You've always been jealous of me, and you're using Leo as an excuse to ruin our lives!"

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the table. "Let me explain reality to you, Claire, because clearly, Mom and Dad never did. The money they used to pamper you? It was mine. For four years, I subsidized your perfect, golden-child life. Every time Mom bought you a designer bag and handed me a clearance sweater, it was funded by my company."

Claire stared at me, her mouth opening and closing like a fish. The illusion of her superiority was shattering in real-time.

"You hit my kid," I said softly, the anger hardening into absolute resolve. "You all sat there and laughed. You made my son feel like he was worthless. So yes, I took away the only thing you actually value—the money. Now you all get to experience exactly what it feels like to be treated like you don't matter."

I stood up, leaving a five-dollar bill on the table for my coffee.

"Good luck at the job interviews, Claire. I hear the market is tough right now."
