Chapter 4 - The FirmMonday morning.

The hardest part about marrying a partner at your law firm is the inevitable collision of your personal and professional lives. Julian and I both worked at Sterling & Hayes, a ruthless corporate litigation firm in downtown Chicago. Julian was a senior partner; I was a senior associate on the partnership track.
He thought my career depended on him. He was wrong.
I walked into the glass-walled lobby at 8:00 a.m. sharp, wearing a tailored charcoal suit and a fresh blowout. I looked completely untouched by the weekend's chaos.
When I stepped off the elevator on the 40th floor, the silence in the bullpen was deafening. The associates were staring at their monitors a little too intently. Julian had clearly already started his spin campaign.
I walked straight past my office and knocked on the heavy mahogany doors of Richard Sterling, the managing partner.
"Come in," Richard's gruff voice called out.
I walked in to find Julian sitting in one of the leather guest chairs, looking frantic. He was in the middle of a sentence. "...and she's just been completely unstable, Richard. It's a high-stress time for her, and she had an episode this weekend. I need a few days of remote work to handle her."
Richard looked at me as I closed the door behind me.
"Morning, Elena. Julian was just telling me about your... episode."
"Was he?" I asked, taking the empty chair next to him. I opened my leather briefcase and pulled out a manila folder, sliding it across Richard's desk. "I assume he didn't mention the part where he was trespassing in our pool with a neighbor, triggering a police response, and violating the firm's morality and public conduct clause?"
Julian leaped to his feet. "You are insane! You can't bring our personal garbage into the office!"
"You brought it into the office when you tried to use my mental health as a cover story for your infidelity," I fired back, not breaking eye contact with Richard.
Richard opened the folder. Inside was a copy of the police report from Friday night, citing Julian's public exposure, alongside printed screenshots of the neighborhood forum documenting the exact timeline.
"This firm represents traditional, conservative corporate clients, Julian," Richard said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "If they catch wind that one of my senior partners was pulled naked out of a pool by the local PD..."
"Richard, it's a misunderstanding—"
"Pack your desk, Julian," Richard said, closing the folder. "You're taking an immediate, indefinite leave of absence. Unpaid. And Elena?"

I looked at the managing partner.
"Take his office. I think you're ready for the partnership track."
