Chapter 1 - The AudienceThe heavy tires of the silver truck crunched to a halt, the sound cutting sharply through the wail of the security siren.

Through the slats of the cedar fence, I watched Mark—Chloe’s husband—step out of the driver's side. He was still wearing his steel-toed work boots and his canvas jacket, exhausted from a long shift. He looked at the flashing strobe light above my patio door, then at his own house, and then toward my open side gate.
He didn't run. He walked with a heavy, confused dread.
Julian was still treading water in the deep end, his eyes wide and frantic, darting from me to the gate. Chloe was whimpering, her manicured hands covering her face, trying to shrink into the chlorine.
"Elena, turn it off," Julian begged, his voice cracking. "I will give you anything you want. Just turn the alarm off before he comes back here."
"I don't want anything from you, Julian," I said, my voice perfectly level. "Except an audience."
Mark stepped through the gate.
He froze. The siren screamed around us, deafening and absolute. Mark looked at me, standing fully dressed on the patio with a bundle of clothes over my arm. Then his eyes drifted to the pool. He saw Julian, bare-chested and panicked. And then he saw his wife, cowering in the water.
Mark didn't yell. He didn't charge at the water. The blood simply drained from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost haunting his own life.
I walked over to the edge of the patio, holding out my arm.
"I believe she forgot these," I said to Mark.
Mark stared at the white halter top and the floral maxi dress. Slowly, mechanically, he reached out and took them from my arm. He looked down at the fabric, his large hands trembling slightly.
"Mark," Chloe cried out from the pool, her voice shrill over the siren. "Mark, please, it was a mistake! He forced himself on me!"
Julian spun around in the water, looking at her in absolute betrayal. "Are you kidding me? You told me Mark was emotionally abusive! You said you were leaving him!"

Mark didn't say a word to either of them. He turned his back on the pool, looked me dead in the eye, and gave a single, slow nod. Then, he walked out of the gate, leaving his wife trapped in the water with my husband.
In the distance, the wail of police sirens began to blend with the house alarm.
