Chapter 6 - The Inside Man

Sarah hiked three miles up the ridge until her police radio caught a signal. She needed to know what was happening back in town. She tuned into the encrypted frequency and listened.
Her heart dropped.
"Suspect Sarah Jenkins has gone rogue. She is armed and dangerous and has kidnapped two minors. Shoot to kill," a voice commanded over the radio. It was her own Captain.
The captain was in on it. He had sold them out. That was how the fake Feds knew to come to the station so quickly. Sarah was completely on her own. She couldn't call for backup because the backup were the ones trying to kill her.
Suddenly, she heard the crunch of branches. She dropped to the mud, aiming her weapon into the dark woods. A figure emerged from the rain.
"Sarah! Don't shoot!" It was Miller. He was out of breath, his uniform covered in mud.
"Miller! Stop right there. Hands where I can see them," she ordered.
"I'm not with them!" Miller pleaded, raising his hands. "I heard the Captain talking to Vance. I realized he was dirty. I slipped out before they could lock the station down. I tracked your tire treads in the mud before the rain washed them away. We have to go, Sarah. They have dogs. They're tracking you to the cabin."
Sarah realized he was telling the truth. The distant baying of hounds echoed through the valley. The safe house was no longer safe.

"We have to go back for the kids," Sarah said, sprinting back down the ridge.
They arrived at the cabin just as headlights swept through the trees. The convoy was here. Sarah burst through the door, grabbed Leo and Maya, and ushered them out the back window just as the front door was kicked in.
