Chapter 5 - The Safe House

Sarah knew they couldn't stay in the cruiser. They would track the GPS. She drove her personal truck deep into the Appalachian foothills, navigating winding, unpaved logging roads from memory until they reached her grandfather's old hunting cabin. It was entirely off the grid. No power, no cell service, just a wood stove and absolute silence.

Once she got a fire going and the kids were warm, she sat across from Leo. The boy was staring at the flames, holding his sister tightly.

"Leo," Sarah said gently. "The men at the station... were those the men who took your mom?"

Leo nodded slowly. "The tall one. He's the one who gave the money to the bad men in the trailer. He said my mom was going to be a 'breeder'."

Sarah felt sick. The corruption ran deep. The people running the ring weren't just street-level thugs; they were powerful, funded, and masquerading as federal authorities to clean up their messes.

She pulled out the burner phone she had recovered from the diner. There was no signal out here, but she could view the offline data. She found a map application with a dropped pin. It was the old Blackwood Lumber Mill, an abandoned facility twenty miles away. It was notoriously dangerous, surrounded by steep ravines.

"Your mom is at the lumber mill, Leo," Sarah promised, her eyes hardening with resolve. "I'm going to get her back. But I need you to stay here. Lock the door. Do not open it for anyone but me."

Leo grabbed her sleeve. "They'll kill you. They have big guns."

"I have a big gun too," Sarah lied, trying to smile. "And they don't know this mountain like I do. You protect Maya. I'll bring Mom home."
