Chapter 6 - The Exhumation

The next week was a blur of legal battles and grim realities.

Standing in the cemetery while the forensics team exhumed my father’s casket was the hardest battle I had ever fought. There were no bullets, no enemy combatants, just the cold, biting reality of grief.

Thomas stood beside me, holding an umbrella to shield us from the light drizzle.

"He was proud of you, Sarah," Thomas said quietly. "Every time you got a promotion, he carried the printed email around the office for a week."

"He shouldn't have died alone," I whispered, my throat tight.

"He didn't die alone. He died fighting to protect you and your grandmother," Thomas replied. "He hid that will. He set the trap. He just needed his soldier to come home and spring it."
