Chapter 6 - The Detective's Visit

Things shockingly went from incredibly bad to absolutely terrifying when the heavy doorbell rang later that afternoon.
It was Detective Miller, a seasoned, sharp-eyed investigator officially hired by the husband's massive life insurance company.
He confidently stepped into the grand foyer without properly wiping his wet shoes, carefully observing the immense tension radiating between Sarah and Mark.
"I sincerely apologize for the intrusion, Mrs. Sterling, but I have a few remaining questions about the exact day of the tragedy," the detective said smoothly.
Sarah painfully forced a fake, trembling smile, politely offering him a comfortable seat in the grand living room.
"My expert team analyzed the moss at the exact cliff edge where you specifically claimed the wheelchair slipped," Miller continued, slowly pulling out a small notebook.
Mark swallowed noticeably hard, his hands suddenly sweating profusely inside his deep coat pockets.
"The forensic evidence clearly shows that the thick moss was actually scraped away by a forceful, heavy push, not a slow, accidental slip," the detective dramatically revealed.
Sarah instantly felt the massive room begin to violently spin around her.
"Furthermore, we strictly checked your husband's cellular phone records from that tragic morning," Miller added, staring dead into Mark's terrified eyes.
"He secretly sent a very strange, scheduled text message to an unknown, untraceable number just ten minutes before the emergency call was placed."
Mark aggressively interrupted the detective, his voice pitching much higher than normal.
"He was deeply depressed, Detective, it was probably just a final, sad goodbye to a close friend."

Miller smiled a cold, highly calculating smile before slowly standing up to leave the mansion.
"Perhaps, but we will definitely trace that exact number eventually, and I solemnly promise you, the brutal truth always comes to light," the detective warned.
