Chapter 5 - The Chem Lab Confession

At 3:00 PM, a discreet black van pulled up to the side street behind Oakridge High. Marcus sat in the back, surrounded by monitors. Sarah and I sat behind him, our hearts pounding against our ribs.

"Audio is live. Video is clear," Marcus said, tapping his keyboard. On the screen, we saw the point-of-view from Madeline's blazer as she walked down the empty, echoing halls of the high school.

At exactly 3:30 PM, she pushed open the heavy wooden door to the abandoned chemistry lab.

Trenton Vance was sitting on a lab table, swinging his expensive sneakers. He was flanked by two of his cronies. He smirked as Madeline walked in.

"Look who showed up," Trenton sneered. "Where's the cash, Maddie?"

"I... I only have a thousand," Madeline said, her voice shaking perfectly. I was so incredibly proud of her acting. "Please, Trenton. It's all my parents had in savings. Please just delete the pictures."

Trenton laughed, hopping down from the table. "A thousand? I said five. You think I'm running a charity?"

"Why are you doing this to me?" Madeline cried out. "I earned that scholarship!"

"That's exactly why," Trenton spat, walking closer to her. The hidden camera caught his face perfectly. "My dad promised me a new Porsche if I got that scholarship. You ruined that. So, I figured your little college fund could buy me the rims instead. It was easy. A little AI software, a few stolen photos from your Instagram, and boom. You're a pariah."

In the van, Sarah let out a sharp breath. We had it. The full confession.

But then, the door to the lab opened again.

Principal Evans walked in.
