Chapter 2 - Unveiling the Nightmare

For a long moment, the only sound in the room was the ticking of the wall clock. Madeline stared at me, trembling like a trapped bird.

"You can't do anything, Dad," she finally whispered, fresh tears spilling over her cheeks. "If you go to the school, they'll release them. My life will be over. Mom will get fired. You don't know who you're dealing with."

"Then tell me," I urged, keeping my voice as steady as concrete. "Tell me exactly who we are dealing with. You are my daughter, Madeline. There is nothing on this earth I wouldn't do to protect you. But you have to let me in."

She hesitated, then slowly pulled the phone from behind her back. Her hands shook violently as she unlocked the screen and handed it to me.

I braced myself, but nothing could have prepared me for what I saw. There were dozens of photos. Disgusting, compromising photos of a girl who looked exactly like Madeline. But as I looked closer, my mechanic’s eye for detail caught the discrepancies. The lighting was slightly off around the neck. The background reflections didn't match.

"These aren't you," I said, looking up at her.

"They're deepfakes," she sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "AI-generated. But they look so real, Dad. Nobody will believe me. They hacked my social media, stole my normal pictures, and made... these."

"Who is 'they'?"

"Trenton Vance," she choked out. "And his friends. They run the school, Dad. Trenton’s father is the biggest real estate developer in the state. He practically owns the police department. They targeted me because I got the academic scholarship that Trenton wanted. He told me if I didn't pay him five thousand dollars to 'compensate' him, he would ruin my life."

The name hit me like a sledgehammer. Richard Vance. He was the man who owned the commercial plaza where Sarah's pharmacy was located. He was the man who was currently trying to buy out the auto shop where I worked.

They weren't just threatening my daughter. They held our entire family's livelihood in their hands.

"He wants five thousand dollars by Friday," Madeline cried. "Dad, what are we going to do?"

I pulled her into my arms, pressing her head against my chest just like I did when she was a toddler scared of the thunder. "We aren't paying them a dime," I promised, staring fiercely at the bedroom wall. "We are going to burn their little empire to the ground."
