Chapter 7 - Crossfire

Elena crouched low, pressing her back against the freezing concrete pillar. She took a slow, deep breath, letting her police training override her racing adrenaline. Two shooters. Suppressed weapons. Professional hitmen.
“David, talk to me,” she whispered furiously. “Where are they?”
“One is moving up the left flank, using the ticket kiosks for cover,” David’s voice crackled, frantic but focused. “The other is holding by the stairwell, providing overwatch. You are pinned down, Elena.”
Elena peeked around the edge of the pillar and caught the reflection of the flanking shooter in the glass of a vending machine. He was massive, wearing a dark tactical coat, advancing with ruthless precision.
She couldn't stay here. If they pinned her in a crossfire, she was dead.
Elena grabbed a heavy metal trash can beside the pillar and hurled it blindly into the open concourse. As the heavy metal clattered loudly across the floor, both shooters immediately fired at the noise, their suppressed weapons spitting sparks in the dim light.
Using the split-second distraction, Elena broke cover. She sprinted toward the right flank, firing two rapid, unsuppressed shots from her Glock. The booming roar of her duty weapon echoed like thunder through the terminal, deafening in comparison to the hitmen’s silenced guns.
Her first shot missed, shattering a glass kiosk. Her second shot caught the flanking shooter in the shoulder. He grunted, stumbling backward and dropping his weapon as he crashed to the floor.
“Officer down!” the second shooter yelled, momentarily abandoning his cover to drag his partner back toward the stairwell.
It was all the opening Elena needed. She didn't stay to finish the fight. She sprinted up the broken escalator, her boots pounding the metal grating, and burst through the emergency exit doors into the snowy alleyway above.

“I’m out, David,” Elena gasped, leaning against the cold brick wall of the alley, her lungs burning in the freezing air. “I have the drive. But Thorne knows I was here. The clock is ticking faster now.”
“Get back to your cruiser,” David said. “We need to see exactly what Sarah risked her life to steal.”
