Chapter 14 - The Morning Light

The railyard was swarming with federal agents, medics, and flashing red and blue lights. The storm had finally broken, and the first golden rays of a freezing sunrise were piercing through the Chicago skyline.
Agent Carter, a tall man in a tactical windbreaker, approached Elena as paramedics loaded a handcuffed Captain Harris into the back of a secure transport vehicle.
“You cut it pretty close, Rostova,” Carter said, handing her a steaming cup of coffee from a thermos. “David Vance called me in a panic when your GPS tracker stopped moving and your signal jammed. We moved in blind.”
“I’m just glad you showed up,” Elena said, taking the coffee with bruised, shaking hands. She reached into her vest and pulled out the silver flash drive. “Here. This is the entire ledger. Half the city’s political infrastructure is about to collapse.”
Carter took the drive, slipping it carefully into an evidence bag. “It’s going to be a bloodbath at City Hall. But you did incredible work today, Officer. You saved a lot of lives.”
Elena didn't care about the politicians or the corrupt cops. She looked over toward the waiting ambulance. Sarah Jennings was sitting on the bumper, wrapped in a thick thermal blanket. An EMT was cleaning a cut on her forehead, but for the first time since this nightmare began, Sarah was smiling.
Elena walked over. Sarah looked up, tears welling in her battered eyes. She didn't say a word. She simply reached out and pulled Elena into a fierce, desperate hug.
“Thank you,” Sarah whispered against Elena’s shoulder. “Thank you for believing my little girl.”

“Your little girl is a hero,” Elena smiled gently, pulling back. “Come on. Let’s get you to the hospital. There are two kids who have been driving the nurses crazy all night waiting for you.”
As they climbed into the back of the ambulance, Elena’s phone finally reconnected to the network. It immediately started buzzing with notifications. The world was waking up to a very different truth.
