Chapter 15 - The Dawn

By noon, the narrative on social media had violently flipped.
David Vance had done his magic one last time. He had leaked a redacted summary of the night’s true events to a trusted investigative journalist. The viral video of the cruel neighbor was replaced by breaking news alerts flashing across every screen in the city.
“Hero Mother Kidnapped After Sacrificing Herself for Children.” “Massive FBI Raid Dismantles Syndicate; Local Politicians Implicated.”
The tenement complex on the South Side, once quick to judge and condemn, was now surrounded by news vans demanding to know why society had abandoned an eight-year-old girl and her battered mother. The neighbor who had filmed the video had deleted all her accounts and refused to answer her door.
Inside the bright, warm pediatric ward of Chicago Memorial, none of that noise mattered.
Elena stood in the doorway of the hospital room, watching the scene unfold. Maya was sitting on her mother’s lap, refusing to let go, her face buried in Sarah’s neck. Little Sam was babbling happily in his crib, his breathing perfectly clear and steady.
Sarah looked up, catching Elena’s eye from the doorway. She mouthed the words, “Thank you.”
Elena gave a small nod, tipping an imaginary hat, and stepped back out into the hallway.
She walked out of the hospital and into the crisp, freezing sunlight of the Chicago afternoon. Her jaw ached, she was running on zero sleep, and she knew she was going to have to spend the next week buried in federal debriefings and internal affairs paperwork.

But as she climbed into her cruiser and started the engine, she felt a profound sense of peace. The monsters had been dragged into the light, a corrupt system was burning down, and a family had been made whole again.
Officer Elena Rostova put the car in gear and drove off into the city, ready for whatever the next shift might bring.
