Chapter 3 - The Money Trail

Two weeks passed. True to Victoria's instructions, I had a locksmith change every deadbolt on the house. David had shown up twice, pounding on the door, begging to talk. Both times, I simply turned up the television and ignored him until he drove away.
Victoria's forensic accountant was a miracle worker. On a rainy Thursday, I sat in Victoria’s office as she turned her laptop toward me.
"I told you," Victoria said, tapping a manicured fingernail against the screen. "It’s never just about the baby."
I leaned in, scanning the bank statements. There were transfers. Huge ones. Thousands of dollars moved from our joint savings account into a shell LLC over the past eight months.
"What is this?" I asked, my stomach twisting.
"This," Victoria said, "is David and Chloe preparing to steal your marital assets long before you ever took a pregnancy test. Chloe is listed as the registered agent of this LLC. Over the last eight months, David has funneled nearly sixty thousand dollars into it. The vasectomy? The sudden accusation of cheating? It was a smokescreen."
The realization hit me like a bucket of ice water.
David hadn't left me because he thought I was unfaithful. He had been planning to leave me for Chloe all along. The pregnancy just gave him the perfect excuse to paint me as the villain, hoping the shame would force me into signing that horrific, one-sided divorce settlement without looking too closely at the bank accounts.
"He set me up," I whispered. "He tried to destroy my reputation so I would walk away with nothing."
"Exactly," Victoria said, her eyes flashing. "But he made a fatal error. He committed marital dissipation of assets, and he did it with a coworker. We aren't just going to file for divorce, Sarah. We are going to subpoena his law firm for Chloe’s employment records, and we are going to freeze all of his personal accounts."

She leaned back in her chair. "It's time to let the rats know the ship is sinking. Give me the green light."
"Burn it to the ground," I said.
