Chapter 1 - The Measurement

Dr. Aris didn’t flinch under David’s aggressive stare. He simply tapped the keyboard on the ultrasound machine, bringing up a series of frozen frames and a grid of digital measurements.

David scoffed, crossing his arms over his chest. "Let me guess, it’s exactly six weeks along, right? Just in time for her little affair with whoever the hell she’s been seeing."

"David, shut up," I whispered, my voice trembling with a mixture of rage and absolute terror.

Chloe let out a soft, theatrical sigh, leaning against the doorframe. "David, don’t yell at her. It’s a clinic. Let’s just get the confirmation and let the lawyers handle the rest."

Dr. Aris ignored Chloe entirely. He picked up a laser pointer from the counter and clicked it on, the red dot landing directly on the peanut-shaped blob on the screen.

"Mr. Hayes," Dr. Aris began, his voice dangerously calm. "In a standard first-trimester scan, we measure the crown-rump length to determine gestational age. It is incredibly precise. When your wife came in today, she believed she was around six weeks pregnant because she just got a positive home test."

"Right," David snapped. "Which proves my point. I had my vasectomy exactly twelve weeks ago. Do the math, Doc."

"I have," Dr. Aris said, his eyes narrowing. "And unfortunately for your narrative, Mr. Hayes, your wife is not six weeks pregnant."

The red dot circled the image on the screen, then pointed to a number in the bottom right corner.

"She is sixteen weeks and four days pregnant," Dr. Aris stated, the words echoing like a gavel striking wood. "Conception occurred roughly one entire month before your vasectomy procedure. Furthermore, because Mrs. Hayes has an anterior placenta and a documented history of irregular cycles—which I see in her chart—it is incredibly common for women not to experience typical early symptoms or register a positive on low-sensitivity drugstore tests until the hormone levels plateau."

The silence that followed was absolute.

It was the kind of silence that happens right after a car crash, before the screaming starts.

David’s face lost all its color, morphing from arrogant flushed red to a sickly, ashen gray. His arms fell limply to his sides. He stared at the screen, his mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish. "Sixteen... sixteen weeks?"

"Yes," Dr. Aris said coldly. "This is your biological child, conceived while your reproductive system was fully intact. Now, unless you are the patient or the patient's invited support person, I am going to have to ask you and your... guest... to leave my examination room immediately."

Chloe pushed off the doorframe, her pristine composure cracking. "Wait, no. That can't be right. Ultrasounds can be wrong. She probably faked her last cycle date!"

Dr. Aris glared at her with the fury of a medical professional whose expertise was being questioned by a home-wrecker. "Fetal bone measurements do not lie, ma'am. Get out of my clinic before I call security."

David took a shaky step toward my bed. "Sarah... I... sixteen weeks?"

I sat up, pulling my yellow sundress down over my gel-covered stomach. A new, fierce energy surged through my veins, hot and brilliant. The trembling in my hands vanished completely.

"You heard the doctor, David," I said, my voice ringing with an icy authority I didn't know I possessed. "Get out. And take the trash with you."
