Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Century

Eight months later, the criminal trial began. It was a grueling, emotionally draining process. Chloe’s defense strategy was entirely centered on throwing Liam under the bus. She claimed she was suffering from severe prenatal psychosis and that Liam had coerced her into going on the trip, threatening to divorce her if she didn't comply.

Liam’s defense, naturally, was to attack Chloe, claiming she was a negligent mother who manipulated him.

Sitting in the witness box, watching them tear each other apart, I realized they had never truly loved each other. They had only loved the image of their life, funded by my parents' delusions.

When it was my turn to testify, the defense attorney tried to paint me as a jealous, barren spinster who orchestrated the arrest to steal the children.

“Ms. Vance,” Liam’s lawyer sneered, pacing the floor. “Isn't it true you have always been envious of your sister-in-law? That you seized an honest mistake to take the family you could never have?”

I looked at the jury. Twelve ordinary people who had listened to the horrific details of the neglect.

“No,” I said clearly. “I am not jealous of a woman who leaves her three-year-old child to cry on a kitchen floor while she boards a first-class flight to Cabo. I didn't steal these children. I caught them when their parents threw them away.”

The jury deliberated for less than four hours.

Guilty on all counts of felony child endangerment and abandonment.

As the verdict was read, Chloe collapsed into hysterics, screaming that it was my fault, that her unborn baby was going to be born in prison. Liam just stared straight ahead, completely hollow. My parents, sitting in the gallery, wept.

I felt a tear slip down my cheek. Not out of sadness for them, but out of profound relief for the kids. They were finally safe.
