Chapter 2 - The Delusion of the Grandparents

I had just gotten the kids settled in my living room, armed with blankets and a fresh batch of pancakes, when the frantic pounding on my front door began. I knew exactly who it was.

I stepped outside onto the porch and closed the door firmly behind me, not wanting the kids to hear. My mother and father stood there, looking panicked but surprisingly indignant.

“Where are they?!” my mother shrieked, trying to peer through the front window. “Maya, what on earth is going on? We got a call from the police saying Liam’s children were here!”

“They are inside, safe,” I said, crossing my arms. “Which is more than I can say for how their parents left them.”

My father scoffed, waving a hand dismissively. “Oh, don't be so dramatic, Maya. Liam called us from his layover. They just needed a little vacation. Chloe is hormonal. You were supposed to be there this morning!”

I stared at the man who had raised me, feeling completely disconnected from him. “I explicitly told you last night that I would not watch them. Liam and Chloe left a ten-year-old in charge of three toddlers and flew to Mexico. That is a felony, Dad.”

“They are your blood!” my mother yelled, her face turning red. “You are ruining your brother’s life! He said the police are threatening to issue an arrest warrant. You need to call the station right now and tell them it was a misunderstanding. Tell them you were just late getting there!”

The sheer audacity of her request left me temporarily speechless. They wanted me to lie to the police, to take the blame for child neglect, just to protect their golden boy.

“No,” I said simply.

My father stepped forward, trying to use his height to intimidate me. “You will do as you are told, Maya. Give us the kids. We’ll take them to our house and wait for Liam to get back. You are clearly too bitter to handle this.”

“Actually, Dad,” I smiled, though there was zero warmth in it, “CPS already did a background check on you both an hour ago. You were denied emergency placement because you explicitly told the social worker on the phone that you believed leaving the kids alone was 'a harmless mistake.' CPS deemed you an enabler and a flight risk. If you try to take these kids, I will have you arrested for kidnapping.”

My parents froze. For the first time in my thirty-two years of life, they realized they had absolutely no power over me.

“Leave my property,” I commanded. “And don't come back.”
