Chapter 7 - THE POLICE INVOLVEMENT

The police cruisers pulled up in front of Grandpa’s house, parking at an angle to block the street.
Three uniformed officers stepped out, accompanied by a woman in a sharp business suit carrying a clipboard.
She introduced herself as a caseworker from Child Protective Services.
Grandpa invited them inside, leading them straight to the dining room table where the photographs were laid out.
The officers took one look at the evidence, their expressions turning instantly grim and professional.
The caseworker sat down next to me, speaking in a very soft, comforting voice.
"You are completely safe now," she promised me, gently placing a hand on the table.
"I need you to tell me exactly what happened, and I need you to be completely honest."
With Grandpa sitting right beside me, holding my hand, I finally told them everything.
I told them about the punishments for dropping a fork, the bruises for looking at her the wrong way, and the constant, suffocating threats.
I told them how Valerie would perfectly cover my bruises with makeup before my father came home from his trips.
Marcus sat in the corner of the room, crying silently into his hands as he listened to the horrors his daughter had endured.
"We pulled over a woman matching Valerie’s description a few blocks away for reckless driving," one of the officers announced.
"She was incredibly frantic, demanding access to frozen bank funds and trying to flee the jurisdiction."
The caseworker took detailed notes, nodding sympathetically as I finished my statement.
"We have more than enough evidence to proceed with an immediate arrest," the lead officer confirmed, turning to Marcus.
"Sir, we are going to need a formal statement from you regarding your absence and lack of knowledge."
Marcus stood up, his face pale, completely willing to cooperate with whatever they needed.
"I will give you everything," Marcus said, his voice breaking.
"Just please tell me you are going to lock her away."
The officer nodded firmly, pulling his radio from his belt to make the call.

"Dispatch, proceed with the arrest of the suspect currently in custody on charges of severe child abuse," the officer ordered.
A massive weight finally lifted off my chest, knowing she could never hurt me again.
