Chapter 5 - THE CONFRONTATION

I was standing in the middle of the living room when my father walked in.

He looked at me, taking in my pale face, the dark circles under my eyes, and the oversized sweater I was wearing.

"What is going on here?" Marcus asked softly, all the anger suddenly draining out of him.

Grandpa Silas walked over to the coffee table and picked up a large manila envelope.

He had driven to the local pharmacy early that morning to have the digital photos printed out.

He didn't say a single word as he handed the thick envelope to my father.

Marcus opened the flap and pulled out the stack of glossy photographs.

I watched his face carefully as he flipped through the terrible images of my bruised and battered body.

His expression shifted from confusion to shock, and then finally, to absolute horror.

His breathing became shallow and rapid, his hands shaking so badly he almost dropped the pictures.

"Where did she get these?" Marcus whispered, his voice cracking with devastated disbelief.

"Did she fall down the stairs?"

"Don't play dumb with me, Marcus," Grandpa growled, his patience finally running out.

"Those are grip marks on her wrists, and those are welts from a leather belt on her back."

Marcus looked up at me, his eyes filled with tears that he was fighting desperately to hold back.

He took a step toward me, reaching his hand out to comfort me.

Before I could stop myself, I flinched violently, stepping backward and instinctively raising my arms to protect my face.

That involuntary reaction was more damning than any photograph could ever be.

My father stopped dead in his tracks, realizing that his own daughter was completely terrified of a raised hand.

A choked sob escaped his lips as the devastating reality of what had been happening in his home finally set in.

"Valerie did this?" he asked, though he already knew the horrible truth.

I slowly lowered my arms and nodded, tears streaming silently down my face.

Marcus turned around, his eyes locking onto the front door where Valerie was waiting outside.

The grief on his face instantly transformed into a terrifying, primal rage.
