Chapter 4 - The Uniformed Response

I opened the front door to find two uniformed patrol officers from the local municipal police department standing on the porch, flanked by a man in a dark grey suit holding a leather briefcase. The afternoon sun reflected off their badges as they scanned my dress uniform, taking in the ribbons, the rank insignia, and the calm, controlled expression on my face.

"Good afternoon, officers," I said, stepping back to give them entry. "I’m Lieutenant Marcus Vance, United States Navy. I am the primary homeowner."

The senior officer, a tall man with a salt-and-pepper mustache named Sergeant Miller, nodded respectfully. "Lieutenant Vance. We received a direct dispatch from naval legal command regarding a reported domestic disturbance and potential financial fraud at this address. Are you secure, sir?"

"I am secure, Sergeant," I replied, gesturing toward the living room where Sarah, Brenda, and Julian were standing in frozen silence beneath the sage-green balloon arch. "The individuals in the living room are my wife, Sarah Vance, her mother, Brenda, and a civilian named Julian Thorne. No physical violence has occurred, but there is physical documentation of financial fraud currently sitting on that dessert table."

The man in the grey suit stepped over the threshold, flashing a gold shield inside a leather case. "Lieutenant Vance, I’m Special Agent Harrison with the FBI’s White Collar Crime Division. We were briefed by Commander Ross this morning regarding the unauthorized wire transfers from your deployment account. Is the binder still on the premises?"

"Right over there on the linen table, Agent Harrison," I said, pointing toward the blue folder sitting next to the ruined vanilla cake. "I have video documentation of its location and contents upon my arrival ten minutes ago. I haven't touched the physical pages to preserve fingerprint evidence."

Julian panicked. He bolted from the side of the sofa, making a desperate lunge toward the dessert table with his hand outstretched to grab the blue folder. "This is private property! You have no warrant to search my personal documents!"

"Step away from the table, sir! Now!" Sergeant Miller barked, his hand immediately dropping to the grip of his holstered Taser as he stepped between Julian and the dessert spread.

Julian stopped dead in his tracks, his chest heaving as he stared at the officer’s hand. The realization that his country-club privilege meant absolutely nothing against a federal fraud investigation hit him like a physical blow. He raised his hands slowly to shoulder height, taking two clumsy steps backward until his thighs hit the edge of the sofa.

Agent Harrison walked calmly across the room, pulled a pair of blue nitrile gloves from his pocket, and snapped them onto his hands. He picked up the blue binder, flipping through the pages with practiced efficiency. His eyes scanned the forged Department of Defense forms, the bank transfer receipts, and the copy of Sarah’s driver’s license stapled to the back cover.

"Well, Mr. Thorne," Agent Harrison said, his voice dry and professional as he closed the binder and slid it into a clear plastic evidence bag he retrieved from his briefcase. "This looks like a textbook violation of the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, combined with interstate wire fraud and identity theft. I suggest you refrain from making any further statements without an attorney present."

Sarah let out a piercing shriek, pulling herself up from the sofa and stumbling toward Agent Harrison. "You can't take him! He didn't do anything wrong! I gave him permission to use the money! It’s marital property! I’m his wife, I have a right to spend my husband’s income!"

Agent Harrison paused, looking at Sarah with a expression that bordered on pity. "Ma'am, under federal law, military hazard pay and deployment savings accounts are protected assets when an active-duty member is deployed in a combat zone. You cannot legally assign power of attorney to a third party without the servicemember’s physical, verified signature before a military legal officer. By signing these transfer documents alongside Mr. Thorne, you have implicated yourself as a co-conspirator in a federal fraud scheme."
