Chapter 3 - The Confrontation

The mention of the baby hung in the air like a cloud of tear gas. Sarah sank onto the edge of the cream-colored sofa, burying her face in her hands as deep, racking sobs shook her shoulders. Brenda immediately moved to her side, wrapping an arm around her daughter while shooting me a look of pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You are a monster, Marcus," Brenda hissed, her voice vibrating with venom. "Look at what you’re doing to the mother of your child—or what should have been your child! You left her alone in this massive house for ten months! Do you have any idea the loneliness she went through? She cried herself to sleep every night while you were out playing hero!"

"She wasn't crying alone, apparently," I replied, my voice dropping to an icy monotone that surprised even me. The rage inside my chest was burning white-hot, but my mind felt remarkably clear, functioning with the cold, detached precision of a tactical briefing. "When did it start, Sarah? Before I boarded the transport flight, or the minute my plane left the tarmac?"

Sarah lifted her head, her eyes bloodshot and her makeup running in dark streaks down her cheeks. The defensive mask was gone, replaced by a desperate, manipulative fragility that I had seen her use a hundred times whenever she wanted to avoid accountability.

"It wasn't planned, Marcus!" she cried out, reaching a trembling hand toward me. "You were gone! The time zones were different, the calls were dropping, and I felt so isolated! Julian came over to fix the plumbing in the guest bathroom, and we started talking, and one thing led to another... it was a mistake! But then I got pregnant, and I couldn't tell you while you were deployed! I didn't want to affect your mission focus!"

"You didn't want to affect my mission focus?" I repeated, stepping closer to the coffee table. "So instead of telling the truth, you let Julian move his clothes into my master bedroom. You let him drive my vehicles. You let him drain forty thousand dollars from my deployment savings account to pay for designer nursery furniture and a leased luxury car."

Julian stepped forward, inserting his chest between me and Sarah once again. "We were going to pay it back, man! As soon as my commercial real estate deal closed next quarter, I was going to deposit the full amount back into your account before your rotation ended! Nobody was trying to steal from you! We were just borrowing against the equity to set up a stable environment for the baby!"

I stared at the man I had shared dorm rooms with, the man I had trusted to act as my emergency contact. The sheer, breathtaking entitlement of his explanation made my jaw clench until my molars ground together.

"You don't 'borrow' from a frozen military deployment account, Julian," I said, keeping my hands resting loosely at my sides so he couldn't claim I made a threatening gesture. "You committed identity theft to bypass federal banking flags. That’s a Title 18 federal offense. And that binder sitting on the table? That’s physical evidence of a conspiracy to defraud an active-duty servicemember."

"You have no proof I signed anything!" Julian shot back, his voice rising in panic. "Anyone could have printed those forms out! You're trying to frame me because you're bitter that Sarah chose a real man over a absentee husband!"

Before I could answer, the heavy brass knocker on the front door rapped sharply three times.

Everyone in the room froze. Brenda gasped, clutching Sarah tighter. Julian spun toward the entryway, his eyes wide with the sudden realization that the walls were closing in.

"That would be the local authorities," I said calmly, stepping around Julian toward the foyer. "I suggested you call them five minutes ago. It looks like Commander Ross saved us both the trouble."
